Who is this course for?

This one-day course is suitable for roof workers, scaffolders, maintenance engineers, mast and tower climbers or any industry where persons are required to work where there is a risk of falling from height.

Prerequisites

Medically fit and healthy (if unsure, please contact us). The minimum age for candidates is 18 years.

Course content

AIMS:

  • To understand user level legislative requirements when undertaking any work at height
  • To select, pre use check and correctly fit a personal harness that is fit for purpose
  • Safely select and use restraint equipment in a variety of situations
  • Safely use a combination of equipment to enable hands free work positioning
  • Recognise the difference between work restraint and fall arrest
  • Use lifelines for fall arrest (this is not a full fall arrest course)
  • Combine ladders and PPE to provide a safe system of work when using portable work equipment for short duration works
  • Carry out basic work mate recovery (this does not cover full fall arrest rescue)

COURSE CONTENT:

  • THE LAW:
    • Basic H&S law and requirements (as relevant to WAH)
    • Suitability surveys
    • Hazard Analysis
    • Risk Assessments
    • Permit to Work systems
  • PPE:
    • Don and doff harness, helmet and lanyard
    • Pre-use inspection of PPE
    • Quarantine rules
    • Basic operator maintenance and storage of equipment
  • SAFE SYSTEMS OF WORKING AT HEIGHT (AS PER HIERARCHY):
    • Use of fixed structures, e.g. staircases
    • Use of temporary structures, e.g. scaffolding
    • Use of mobile elevated work platforms
    • Work restraint, e.g. rope and grab
    • Work positioning, e.g. abseiling
    • Fall arrest
  • PRACTICAL SESSIONS:
    • Work Restraint including baskets
    • Basic hands free positioning
    • Ladders, safety devices, tethers and PPE
    • Rescue considerations, including work mate recovery
    • To safely use ladders
  • ASSESSMENT OF COMPETENCE:
    • Correctly assemble, check and fit personal equipment
    • Demonstrate use of restraint techniques
    • Demonstrate use of basic work positioning techniques
    • Demonstrate safe use and installation of ladders
    • Demonstrate the safe installation and use of lifelines
    • Demonstrate a basic work mate recovery
    • Theory paper

Delivery method and assesment

Lectures and practical elements. The course assessment is by short written test and continuous practical assessment.
