RIG Systems provide a comprehensive portfolio of height safety training programmes which include bespoke offsite courses.


RIG Systems lead the policing industry on safe working at height. The authors of the Work at Height Guidance Notes for Policing and the organisers of the annual Policing at Height Symposium, RIG's training portfolio has been embraced by numerous Constabularies around the United Kingdom.

All programmes are certified by the International Rescue Instructors Authority and where applicable the Industrial Roped Access Trade Association. Our height training systems are fully compliant with BS 8454: 2006 Code of practice for delivery of training and education for work at height and rescue.


HEIGHT SAFETY
Description
This 8 hour programme is an introduction height safety awareness programme designed for general law enforcement applications such as negotiating at height. It is designed to be compliant with BS 8437:2005 Code of practice for selection, use and maintenance of personal fall protection systems and equipment for use in the workplace.
This 1-day programme covers the following areas:
Legalities of working at height.
Pre-use inspection and donning of various height related PPE
Use of ladders and rooftop access systems
Personal safety evaluation
Establishment of simple work restraint and fall arrest system



ROOFTOP TECHNICIAN
Description
The Rooftop Technician is now an industry standard programme, designed specifically for dynamic and fast time policing operations where pre-planning is limited. This programme is ideal for POLSAR, Public Order and Armed Response Officers, who may need to deploy onto rooftops or access other high spaces using non-suspension access techniques. .
This 2-day programme covers the following areas:
Personal Protective Equipment visual and tactile pre-use checks.
Correct donning, doffing and maintenance of PPE.
Work restraint and fall arrest safe systems of work.
Repositioning drills
Emergency officer recovery techniques



ABSEIL TECHNICIAN
Description
The Abseil Technician programme is principally aimed at Tactical Fire Arms Teams using abseil as an option to support Dynamic Intervention operations.
This 2-day programme covers the following areas:
Personal Protective and Lifting Equipment visual and tactile pre-use checks.
Correct donning, doffing and maintenance of PPE.
"Rapid Rigging" double single and double rope systems..
Emergency drills.
Weapon and equipment stowage.
 


ABSEIL DISPATCHER
Description
The Abseil Dispatcher supports the Abseil Technician programme training supervisors to rig, dispatch and rescue Abseil Technicians.
This 2-day programme covers the following areas:
Inspection, care and maintenance of Fall Protection PPE.
Physics of failure.
Rigging to anchor bolts and Deadweight Systems..
Dispatch drills.
Emergency drills.
Height related health and safety.
Suspension trauma.
Multiple roping points and long drops.



ABSEIL INSTRUCTOR
Description
The Abseil Instructor programme is for those organisations wishing to develop a self sufficient training system.
This 5-day programme covers the following areas:
UK height related health and safety legislation.
PPE and Lifting Equipment Inspection Competent Person.
Advanced rigging.
Advanced student rescue techniques.
Abseil training risk assessment and control.
Abseil training and assessment.
Administration and record keeping.



ROPE ACCESS TECHNICIAN
Description
This programme is a Police focussed roped access programme designed for teams specialising in technical search and specialist access such as protestor removal. With an additional module and independent assessment, officers can be qualified to IRATA Level 1; otherwise the training is compliant with BS 7985 British Standards for Industrial Roped Access.
This 5-day programme covers the following areas:
Height safety awareness
Selection, use, inspection and maintenance of PPE
Work positioning techniques
Fall arrest awareness
Basic rescue drills
Search access techniques - use of artificial high directionals
Accessing structures and trees



ROPE ACCESS SUPERVISOR
Description
According to BS 7985, all roped access tasks must have a dedicated supervisor competent to rig, implement safe systems of work and provide rescue. This specially adapted programme is designed to support the Roped Access Technician programme, building upon the foundation skills to create a supervisor competent to supervise any work positioning task. Aspirant supervisors must have logged 80 hours of experience over 12 months training prior to attendance on this course. With the requisite experience, it may be possible to assess to IRATA L2.
This 5-day programme covers the following areas:
Height related health and safety.
Safe systems of work and risk control.
Advanced rigging.
Advanced rescue.
Tower and pylon access.
Fall Protection equipment management.


SPECIAL OPERATIONS ACCESS
Description
This programme equips officers to respond to a variety of special policing operations using specialist access techniques and technology. Suitable for Tactical Fire Arms Officers, POLSAR Teams, MSUs and Counter Terrorist Officers, all participants must be trained to the Roped Access Technician level.
This 5-day programme covers the following areas:
Maritime access strategies.
Tree access techniques (rural tactics).
Steel structure intervention (tower and pylon).
Confined space access. .
Street furniture access.


FALL PROTECTION EQUIPMENT COMPETENT PERSON
Description
The Working at Height Regulations (2005), the Personal Protective Equipment Regulations 1992, the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 and the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER), all stipulate the requirement for periodic equipment inspections carried out by competent persons. LOLER, the most prescriptive inspection related legislation, stipulates "Thorough Examinations" must be undertaken every 6 months by a competent person and the results must be recorded and held for 2 years. In addition, "Inspections" should be carried out by a competent person every time the equipment is subjected to abnormal circumstances such as overloading or contamination. The PPE and Lifting Equipment Competent Person is a stand alone programme designed to train equipment custodians to Thoroughly Examine and Inspect all items of PPE and Lifting Equipment used by their organisation.
This 2-day programme covers the following areas:
Height related health and safety.
 Equipment failure and the physics of rigging.
 Fall protection systems.
 Selection and use of PPE and Lifting Equipment.
 Inspecting and examining PPE and Lifting Equipment.
 Equipment management systems and record keeping.
 Equipment repair and disposal.
  


BOLT INSTALLATION TECHNICIAN
Description
For many work at height tasks, the location of existing structural anchors are unsuitable. Installing and testing safety harness bolts either for PPE (Fall Arrest) or work positioning is quick, cost effective and low impact. When installing bolts that conform to BS EN 795 A1, technicians must be competent in accordance with BS 7883.
This 1-day programme covers the following areas:
Height related health and safety.
Selection and use of bolt installation work equipment.
Anchor selection.
Chemical bolt placement and installation.
Mechanical bolt placement and installation.
Testing procedures and recording requirements

RIG also provide a bolt installation and testing service installing anchors to BS EN 7883 and undertaking pullout tests for mechanical and chemical anchors up to 100kN.



MOVING WATER RESPONDER
Description
Many Officers will be exposed to a moving water related hazard during the course of their duties, be it assisting flood evacuation or the control of a river situated crime scene. The Responder programme is an entry level hazard awareness programme that provides Officers with the knowledge, experience and technical training to stay safe when operating around the water margins. This training meets the international standard of the IRIA Awareness level certification.
This 1-day programme covers the following areas:
Basic hydrology, hydro-topography and hazard awareness.
Selection, use, donning and maintenance of PPE and throwlines.
Safe swimming techniques and basic rescue options.
Tactical Incident management.
Flood Response.
Physiological responses to immersion and associated injuries.
