Qualitative Face Fit Teting of RPEQUALITATIVE FACE FIT TESTING OF RPE

Fit testing of a method for checking that a tight fitting face-mask matches individiual's facial features and can provide an adequate level of seal to the warers face.

THE FACE FIT TEST

The type of respirtors that require a fit test are those which employ a tight fitting face piece such as disposable respirators half mask and full masks, including those that form part of a powered or air fed respirator.

The test if performed by a hood being placed over the delegates head and respirator. A bitter or sweet solution is sprayed into the hood. If the solutionis unable to be tasted then they have passed the test. A new test is required for each type of respirator.

WHY IS THE FIT TESTING IMPORTANT?

Not only do employers have a legal obligation to ensure that their workplace is protected as far as is practicable but, failing to select, use, store and maintain the correct RPE can cause workers to breathe in too much hazardous substances at work.

Recent research has established that 5.5 million workers are exposed to respiratory hazards in the workplace. Of these, approximately 50% wear RPE and of this group only 50% wear the equipment that is correctly selected and fitted. This means that only 25% of those at risk are adequately protected.

Therefore, fit testing may be the best health and safety decision you'll ever make.

HOW CAN RIG SYSTEMS HELP?

RPE fit testing can only be conducted by a competent person. All of the Rig Systems Safety advisors are trained and certificated to perform face fit testing.

We suggest each person has a specific 20 minute time slot for each respirator being tested.

Not only will each person being tested receive a certificate of testing, but they will also receive a certified toolbox talk covering:

  • The selection of suitable RPE
  • Correct fitting of RPE
  • Dust Hazards
  • How to recognise a poor fitted RPE and be able to identify poor maintained RPE

The cost for a Rig Systems Advisor to perform the face fit test and conduct a dust hazard toolbox talk is £25, plus VAT per person (subject to a minimum of 4 persons). FFP3, Free Flow 2 dust masks will be supplied as part of the testing.

This updated Operational Circular gives practical advice on the inspection of the suitability of RPE fit testing methods and the meaning of the results generated. The accompanying infomation document gives further more detailed information on fit testing.
