The United Kingdom plays host to an extensive and fascinating collection of birdlife, most of which is welcomed and enjoyed by the UK population. However, some species are a menace and present problems for health and welfare with unhygienic nesting sites and aggressive behaviour. Gulls and pigeons form the two main pest species and can wreak havoc with homes and businesses.
THE PROBLEM
Nesting sites and feeding areas present many hazards to the human population nearby. Gulls in particular, will eat anything and will, therefore, rip through refuse bags and scatter the contents in search of a meal. The close proximity of this major food source and people has reduced the gull’s fear of humans and consequently, their behaviour can be extremely aggressive. In addition to the obvious health hazards associated with the spread of rubbish (causing secondary rodent problems) bird populations can spread diseases such as Salmonella and nesting can encourage insect infestation. Bird droppings deface buildings and damage vehicle paintwork; the repair of which can be costly and time consuming. The noise pollution from bird pests can be a distraction in the workplace and prevent relaxation at home.
THE SOLUTION
RIG Systems can help solve your bird pest problems in two ways:
Removing the Problem: All birds are protected by the Wild life and Countryside Act 1981. However, under the newly issued general license, certain birds are classed as pest species and can be removed by a specifically authorised person if the birds are causing a risk to health or hygiene. RIG Systems is licensed to remove problem birds and nests from business and private premises. This is the initial stage of bird control.
Deterrent and Proofing: Once the problem is cleared, RIG System’s engineers can prevent the birds landing on buildings and nesting with a number of measures including Netting, Spikes and Wires. Whether the problem area is a flat external roof or an internal exposed frame structure, Rig System’s specialists will give you an assessment of the best and most humane way of solving your bird control problems.
